How Do I Know If I’m Saved?

So recently, this question has come up a lot in different conversations I’ve had and I’ve realized that some people make this much more complicated than it really is. What usually happens is people fall into a legalistic mindset. Legalism is when you think that you have to perform good deeds or follow a set of rules in order to go to Heaven.

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY FALSE!

Well then, you ask…”how do I know if I’m saved?”

Romans 10:9 says “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

SIMPLE RIGHT?! So don’t fall into a legalistic mindset. It’s so dangerous because what you’re essentially saying is that Jesus died for no reason. If you could obtain salvation all by yourself then what was the point of Jesus dying for your sins? You are saved by grace and grace alone. Remember that.

Now with that being said, I don’t want you to walk away from this blog post thinking that since you’ve secured your spot in Heaven, it’s OK to continue living in sin. That is one big contradiction and let me tell you why.

2 Corinthians 5:17 says “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

Once you’re saved, you have been made new because the Holy Spirit (who helps you live a life pleasing to God) now lives inside of you. See before you get saved, you don’t have the Holy Spirit. Before you get saved you are led by your flesh and your flesh LOVES and ENJOYS  sin.

CaptureThink about this orange for example. Imagine this is what our heart looks like pre salvation. It’s rotten. There is no Holy Spirit. Just darkness and death.

What would you expect this orange to look like on the outside? You wouldn’t expect it to look good would you? Of course not. You would expect it to have brown spots or mold.

This is because you know that whatever is going on inside the orange will display itself on the outside. You know that the ugliness on the outside of this orange is an indicator that the inside Orange-Mold-And-Penicillin is rotten.

My point is, if you are saved, and you have the Holy Spirit, who is pure good living inside of you, it WILL show through your actions and obedience to God. You wouldn’t expect that moldy orange to be fresh on the inside would you? OF COURSE NOT! So why would it make sense to continue living a rotten and sin filled life when the inside of you has been made new?

As Christians we must remember that we’re called to be separate from the world. Unbelievers should be able to look at us and tell that something is different. We should be able to look back on our lives 3 months ago and be able to say “wow look how far I’ve come!” We should be experiencing constant growth in our relationship with Christ. We should be working towards bearing the fruits of the spirit which are LOVE, JOY, PEACE, FORBEARANCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS and SELF CONTROL (Galatians 22-23). Now don’t get it twisted, this is not to say that you will be SINLESS…but when you allow yourself to be led by the Holy Spirit instead of your flesh, you will SIN LESS. The question of “how much sin can I get away with and still be saved?” won’t even cross your mind and the fruit you bear will never be rotten.

So what is the fruit of your life currently saying about you?
