To Love God

Ok so let’s get right into this. Many of us say that we “love” God but what does that really mean? What is love? Well God is love. Therefore love is everything that God is. 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7 tells us 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. So now we know what love is, but what does it mean to actually love God? Let’s take a look at what the Bible has to say. Loving God means to…

  1. love His people. You can’t love God and not love his people. 1 John 4:20 says “20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.” I think the biggest thing that hinders our love for others is holding on to past hurts. We have to learn to LET THINGS GO. Someone wronged you in the past and you’re still holding on to it? LET IT GO. You heard so and so is talking about you? LET IT GO. It’s not healthy to hold onto negativity. And I know that’s easier said than done but storing up hatred is exhausting. It’s so much easier and feels so much better to forgive, love on people, and LET IT GO. Trust me.
  2. not love this world. 1 John 2:15 says Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.” I think this is something a lot of people struggle with, myself included. The world has it’s own way of thinking about things, which are completely opposite of God’s way. Love of money, selfishness (putting yourself 1st), idolatry (being obsessed with celebrities/athletes,etc.), premarital sex, the list can go on and on. These are things the world see nothing wrong with. But 1 John 2:17 says The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.” ….And if this is something you’re struggling with, Romans 12:2 has a wonderful word of advice for you. It says “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.  It’s so important to renew your mind continually with the Word of God.
  3. die to yourself. I had to really check myself because this is something I struggled with. Actually it’s a CONTINUAL struggle. I have to make daily decisions to die to myself and it’s hard!!! Because sometimes I just want to do what I WANT TO DO. But we have to remember that our lives are so much bigger than us. We have to let our lives go! Everything you had planned may not be what God has planned for you. And you need to realize and understand that God’s plan for your life is 10x greater than anything you could’ve planned for yourself. My favorite reminder of this is Matthew 10:39. It says “Whoever finds their life shall lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake shall find it” God wants us to give up our lives for Him. Not meaning in death but in will. We should be living out God’s will for our life, not our own.

Well that’s all for today. I hope you enjoyed/learned something from this. Until next time 🙂
